Apple Gears Up for Under-Screen Face ID on iPhone 18 Pro Models
January 6, 2026
Apple is reportedly testing an innovative under-screen Face ID technology for its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, using a special "spliced micro-transparent glass" window integrated into the display, according to a Chinese leaker.

The leak, shared by "Smart Pikachu" on Weibo—an account known for accurate supply-chain insights—suggests that this new glass allows infrared sensors in the TrueDepth system to pass through the display without distortion. This approach mirrors existing industry techniques involving micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass designed to enhance IR transmission selectively over the sensor array.

Sources indicate that Apple has already instructed suppliers to accelerate preparations for potential production. While rumors have consistently pointed toward under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro, there is some debate over whether this feature will debut in 2026.
A report by The Information from May stated that the iPhone 18 Pro might omit the Dynamic Island in favor of a small pinhole cutout at the top left of the display. However, other sources, including tech analyst Ross Young, suggest that the Dynamic Island could be retained but reduced in size, with the TrueDepth sensors shifted below the display via the new glass window.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also indicated that the Dynamic Island will be slimmer in the next generation, supporting the idea of a smaller, more integrated front display feature. The newly proposed micro-transparent glass seems to bolster this hypothesis, as it could facilitate a smaller cutout with embedded under-screen sensors.
Although "Smart Pikachu" does not specify whether the testing is limited to Pro models, supply-chain sources often discuss "series" in the context of early panel and material testing corresponding to high-end Apple devices.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch in September 2026 alongside a new foldable iPhone. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are anticipated to be released in early 2027, marking a shift in Apple's traditional annual launch cycle.

Despite the success of the iPhone 17 in 2025, multiple reports now suggest that the standard iPhone 18 will not arrive until spring 2027, as Apple plans a more staggered, split-cycle release.
In other news, recent reports have highlighted Apple's ongoing design guidelines. For instance, the popular language learning app Duolingo has been criticized for using the iPhone’s Live Activity feature to place ads directly on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island—violating Apple’s strict interface policies.

Additionally, a new accessory called the 'Clicks Communicator,' a BlackBerry-like device, has been unveiled, designed as a second phone focused on messaging rather than content consumption. It’s compatible with the iPhone, offering an alternative communication tool.
Looking ahead, Apple is rumored to introduce a low-cost MacBook in 2026, possibly featuring a 13-inch display and aimed at the entry-level market. A separate report suggests a 12.9-inch MacBook with the A18 Pro chip could also launch early next year, offering a more affordable option in the Mac lineup.

Meanwhile, Apple announced updates to its Fitness+ platform, including a limited-edition New Year challenge and Strava integrations to motivate users to stay active.
Finally, at CES 2026, Govee and Belkin announced new Apple-compatible accessories, including Matter-enabled ceiling and floor lights, and sophisticated magnetic power banks, hinting at an ecosystem of connected devices designed for Apple users.
