Instagram Limits Hashtags to Promote Quality Over Quantity
December 30, 2025

Instagram is implementing new rules to curb the use of excessive hashtags in posts. According to an announcement by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, the platform will now restrict users to a maximum of five hashtags per post.
Mosseri emphasized that while hashtags aid in searchability, using too many does not necessarily boost reach. Instead, he advises users to focus on creating content that truly resonates with their audience. "Quality over quantity is key," he states on his “Instagram advice” channel.
Additionally, Instagram has taken steps to discourage spammy hashtag use, especially with the introduction of Threads. Now, each post can include only one hashtag to promote more meaningful communities rather than engagement hacking. Mosseri explained that this change aims to shift the focus toward genuine interactions within interest-based groups.
