Apple is reportedly testing cutting-edge miniaturization technology to significantly reduce the size of the front-facing camera on its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models, according to a Chinese leaker.

The HIAA Technology: Revolutionizing Display and Camera Integration

Digital Chat Station, a well-known Weibo account with over three million followers, claims that Apple is experimenting with a new single hole-in-active-area (HIAA) hole punch for the front camera. Currently, this camera resides within the Dynamic Island feature on existing iPhone models.

HIAA is a display manufacturing innovation developed by Samsung and other display manufacturers that allows integration of front-facing cameras directly into OLED panels without occupying additional screen space. This technique involves laser micro-drilling, creating a small, precise hole within the active pixel area, leading to a minimalistic aperture.

Past and Present Rumors about Apple's Front Camera Tech

Digital Chat Station has previously indicated that Apple is exploring HIAA for the iPhone 18 Pro, alongside under-display Face ID technology. A report from The Information earlier suggested that under-screen Face ID was under consideration, with the front camera positioned in the top-left corner of the display.

The latest report is somewhat ambiguous. The leaker notes that adopting HIAA could alter the device’s screen shape due to the smaller camera hole, but it remains unclear whether this signifies a move to a different camera placement or a smaller Dynamic Island. Notably, there's no mention of under-display Face ID in this update.

Expected Design Changes and Other Features

Emerging reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro models will feature a smaller Dynamic Island, aligning with the current rumors about the reduced camera cutout.

In addition to the camera tech, the leaker reiterated several previous details:

  • A rear lens with variable aperture
  • The same camera plateau design as the iPhone 17 Pro
  • A "transparent design" for the Ceramic Shield area to facilitate MagSafe charging
  • The iPhone 18 Pro Max potentially incorporating a "steel-shell battery," possibly referencing a stainless steel vapor chamber cooling system.

Launch Timeline and Future Models

The next-generation iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, a new iPhone Air, and a foldable iPhone, is expected to launch in September 2026. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are projected to arrive in spring 2027, marking a shift to a split-cycle approach for Apple's product launches.

Additional Insights from CES 2026

During CES 2026, Samsung showcased a crease-less foldable OLED panel, hinting at potential display innovations for future Apple foldable devices. This technology promises a seamless fold without visible creases, likely influencing Apple’s foldable iPhone plans.

Industry and Market Outlook

Interestingly, some reports indicate that Apple might skip releasing a standard iPhone 18 this year, with plans suggesting a significant delay until spring 2027. Despite the popularity of the iPhone 17 in 2025, the company appears to be extending the lifecycle of current models and introducing substantial innovations in upcoming lines.
