Google Plans to Allow Gmail Address Changes Without Losing Access to Emails
December 30, 2025

Good news for Gmail users who find their current email address embarrassing or inconvenient: Google is starting to allow users to change their Gmail address without losing access to their emails and files.
As first discovered by the Google Pixel Hub group on Telegram and later reported by 9to5Google, a Hindi version of the Gmail support website indicates that Google is “gradually rolling out to all users” the feature to update the email address associated with their Google account. This includes switching from an existing Gmail address to a new one ending in gmail.com.
Once you change your email address, your old Gmail address will still function as an alias, and you can sign into Google services using either your new or old email. However, users will not be able to create new Gmail addresses linked to the same account for context or recovery purposes for at least 12 months.
As of Sunday afternoon, the English support page still states, “If your account’s email address ends in @gmail.com, you usually can’t change it,” suggesting instead that users modify their display name or create a new email and transfer emails and contacts manually.
Stay tuned for further updates as this feature becomes more widely available.
