Microsoft Edge to Receive Major UI Refresh Incorporating Copilot Design Language

January 5, 2026

Microsoft is set to roll out a significant user interface overhaul for its Edge browser, showcasing a design language influenced by its Copilot AI assistant. The company has begun integrating these visual updates into early Canary and Dev test versions of Edge, signaling a shift toward a more AI-centric browser experience.

Key Design Changes

The upcoming Edge update features several notable UI modifications:

  • A new settings section mirroring the appearance of the Copilot app
  • Refreshed context menus for a cleaner, more consistent look
  • An redesigned new tab page with updated visuals
  • Rounded window corners
  • A color palette and typography consistent with Microsoft’s Copilot branding

Broader Integration and Future Plans

These UI elements are not limited strictly to the Copilot mode. Microsoft is actively embedding the Copilot-specific design language throughout Edge, which could hint at its broader application across other Microsoft web properties and possibly within Windows itself in the future.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman clarified last year that the company intends to evolve Edge rather than develop a completely new AI-native browser. As Suleyman stated, “There isn’t going to be a new browser; this is just going to be one experience,” emphasizing the seamless integration of AI features within the existing browser framework.

Significance of the Design Evolution

This tighter integration of Copilot’s design language underscores Microsoft's strategic focus on AI-powered features. The Copilot design is notably distinct from Microsoft's traditional Fluent design system, which is used across many of its products. The aesthetic overhaul is believed to have been influenced by the infusion of the Inflection AI team into Microsoft in 2024, with the new look closely resembling the Pi AI assistant developed by Inflection AI.
