Will the Mac Pro Meet Its End in 2026? Inside Apple’s Pro Desktop Strategy

December 31, 2025

Apple's Mac Pro desktop computer

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple’s high-end Mac Pro desktop might be heading toward discontinuation. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman reported that the company has "largely written off" the Mac Pro, emphasizing that Apple's focus is shifting toward the Mac Studio for professional software needs.

Current Development and Future Outlook

While Apple is developing a high-end M5 Ultra chip, Gurman indicates that the primary focus is now on the new Mac Studio powered by this processor. This shift suggests that the Mac Pro might not see significant updates before 2026, and Gurman hasn't heard of plans for an M5 Ultra-powered Mac Pro. However, he hasn't entirely dismissed the possibility, leaving room for surprises.

The Mac Pro’s Redundancy

In recent years, the Mac Pro has become somewhat redundant for many professional users. Its main features—a larger form factor and PCIe expansion slots—are increasingly available in the more affordable Mac Studio, which last received an update with the M2 Ultra chip in June 2023. Gurman's comments imply that the Mac Pro's role within Apple's product lineup could be diminishing, with the Mac Studio occupying the pro desktop niche moving forward.

What About Future Updates?

Given the current trajectory, major developments or updates to the Mac Pro seem unlikely before 2026. Apple’s strategic emphasis appears to be on integrated, high-performance machines like the Mac Studio rather than traditional, large-scale desktop towers.
