Apple’s Leadership Transition: Preparing for the Future
January 8, 2026
Apple is undergoing its most significant leadership reshuffle in over a decade, signaling a new era for the tech giant. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, multiple senior executives are set to depart, prompting CEO Tim Cook to begin shaping the company's next generation of leaders.
Key Leadership Changes and Departures
Jeff Williams, long seen as Cook’s potential successor, has already handed over his operations responsibilities and will leave the company later this year. His departure marks the first major shift in Apple’s senior leadership since 2019, when Jony Ive and Angela Ahrendts left. Gurman suggests this is just the start of a broader reorganization, with many veteran executives considering retirement or role changes.
Phil Schiller continues to oversee the App Store and product launch events, although he stepped down from daily operations in 2020. Luca Maestri, who resigned as CFO last year, still manages real estate and information systems. Gurman emphasizes that Apple’s era of stability is ending, with several executives weighing retirement.
AI and Hardware Leadership Uncertainty
John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior VP of machine learning and AI strategy, has led efforts in AI since joining from Google in 2018. However, his role has been uncertain due to setbacks with Siri and internal struggles over AI direction. Some of his duties are now being reassigned to Mike Rockwell, recently involved with the Vision Pro.
Apple is reportedly exploring external candidates for AI leadership, including a senior AI executive from Meta Platforms, which recently hired Alexandr Wang of Scale AI and launched a Superintelligence Labs division.
In hardware, Johny Srouji, SVP of hardware technologies responsible for Apple’s custom chips, is evaluating his future amid milestones like transitioning to Apple Silicon and developing in-house cellular modems. Internal successors could include Zongjian Chen or Sri Santhanam.
Lisa Jackson, VP of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, is also considering retirement. Her expanded responsibilities include government affairs and accessibility, though her profile has been lower recently.
Leadership Outlook and Potential Successors
Tim Cook, soon turning 65, remains at the center of leadership discussions. With Williams gone, Apple lacks a clear second-in-command. Gurman suggests Cook may eventually transition to a chairman role, similar to Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, or Larry Ellison.
The most probable internal successor is John Ternus, SVP of hardware engineering, who has been increasingly visible in product strategy. Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and became SVP in 2021, has overseen key products like the iPhone and Mac. Apple’s PR teams have already been highlighting Ternus, indicating preparations for a leadership transition. Gurman notes that Ternus, at 50, is "the most likely heir apparent," fitting the profile of a future CEO, and the company seems to favor a technologist over a sales or operations executive to lead innovation in AI, mixed reality, and home automation.
Future Implications
This leadership shake-up might signal a focus on innovation and technological development, especially in emerging categories. Apple’s board is likely to prioritize a CEO with deep technical expertise, and internal candidates such as Ternus are poised to take on the mantle when the time comes.
