OpenAI Launches App Directory and Expands ChatGPT Capabilities

January 3, 2026

OpenAI has unveiled a new App Directory, providing users with a comprehensive browsing experience for all available tools within its ecosystem, alongside the release of its SDK to enable developers to craft new interactive experiences directly within ChatGPT's UI. This move aligns with CEO Sam Altman's vision of transforming ChatGPT into a robust platform with expected features and functionalities.

New App Ecosystem and Terminology Changes

The company has rebranded certain features to better reflect their functions. Previously known as "connectors," integrations that allow users to import data from services like Google Drive or Dropbox are now called apps. The support page clarifies the terminology:

  • Apps with file search (formerly chat connectors)
  • Apps with deep research (formerly deep research connectors)
  • Apps with sync (formerly synced connectors)

Additionally, these apps may leverage Memory, if enabled, and utilize user data for model training purposes across all ChatGPT tiers, including Free, Plus, Go, and Pro, provided users have opt-in to "improve the model for everyone."

New Interactive Apps and Market Expansion

OpenAI has introduced several new ChatGPT apps, enhancing the user experience across different markets:

  • Spotify in ChatGPT: Now available in the UK, Switzerland, and the EU, allowing users to listen to music, create playlists, and manage libraries directly within the chatbot.
  • Apple Music app: Enables users to find music, curate playlists, and handle subscriptions seamlessly.
  • DoorDash: Transforms recipe ideas and meal planning into actionable shopping carts, streamlining the grocery process within the chat interface.

Future Monetization Strategies

While specific plans remain under wraps, OpenAI hints at exploring various monetization avenues, including digital goods. The company states, "We’re exploring additional monetization options over time, including digital goods, and will share more as we learn from how developers and users build and engage."
