How to Hide and Disable AI Features in Google Chrome
January 5, 2026
Most modern desktop browsers come equipped with a variety of AI-powered features, but not everyone wants to use or see them. If you'd like to tidy up your Chrome experience by removing or hiding these AI tools, here’s a straightforward guide to do just that.
Removing the Gemini Button
By default, Chrome shows a prominent Gemini button in the top-right corner, prompting you to engage with Google’s chatbot. To dismiss it:
- Right-click on the Gemini button and select Unpin.
- This only removes the button from view but keeps the keyboard shortcut (Alt + G) active, which still opens Gemini.
To disable further, navigate to:
chrome://settings/ai/gemini
- Turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser.
- Additionally, disable options like Show Gemini in system tray and Page content sharing to prevent Gemini from appearing in other areas or sharing tab content.
Disabling the AI Mode Button
Google promotes using AI mode for context-based search responses directly from the Omnibox. To prevent accidental activation or hide the button:
- Go to:
chrome://flags
- Search for "AI mode".
- Set AI Mode Omnibox entrypoint to Disabled.
- Enable AI Entrypoint Disabled on User Input.
- Disable Omnibox Allow AI Mode Matches to prevent suggestions.
- After configuring, restart Chrome. The AI Mode button will no longer appear in the address bar.
Turning Off "Help Me Write" Suggestions
Chrome and Google Docs now feature "Help me write", which suggests content in form fields or when typing. To disable these prompts:
- Visit:
chrome://settings/ai/helpMeWrite
- Toggle Offer writing help to Off.
Blocking AI-Based Browsing History Search
Google Chrome's AI-powered History Search allows querying your browsing history by content, raising privacy concerns. To disable:
- Navigate to:
chrome://settings/ai/historySearch
- Switch the toggle Off to prevent sharing browsing data for AI searches.
Resetting Search Results to Only Show Web Content
Google often displays AI Overviews at the top of search results, overshadowing traditional links. To avoid this:
- Install the extension Bye Bye, Google AI (created by the author) to hide AI Overviews.
- Alternatively, set Chrome to always search the standard Google "Web" tab:
- Go to:
chrome://settings/searchEngines
- Click Add to create a custom search engine, entering:
-
Name: Google (Web Only)
-
Shortcut: google.com
-
URL:
{google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s
-
- Save and set this new engine as default. Now, searches will bypass AI Overviews, displaying only web results.
By following these steps, you can keep Chrome's AI features out of sight and maintain a more conventional browsing experience.
