Lenovo Unveils ThinkPad Rollable XD Concept at CES 2026

flexible OLED display wrapping around the lid

At CES 2026, Lenovo introduced an innovative concept laptop—the ThinkPad Rollable XD. This device stays true to the classic ThinkPad aesthetic with its iconic red TrackPoint nub but features a revolutionary flexible OLED display that wraps around the top lid. Users can slide their finger along the fold to expand the screen vertically, transforming from a 13.3-inch display into a taller 15.9-inch screen, providing extra space for productivity.

Similar to Lenovo’s previous ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 rollable, the XD's display and motors are housed within the lid, unlike the earlier model where the display was embedded in the chassis. When closed, the ThinkPad XD can display touch-friendly widgets on its exterior, turning the lid into a usable workspace. A gentle tap extends the display slightly, making it easier to open and access during use.

The outer touchscreen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, ensuring durability and a premium feel. Notably, the see-through portion of the lid exposes the mechanics of the rollable display—motors, pulleys, and flexible components—adding a futuristic aesthetic and insight into its inner workings.

An Interactive and Fun Design

Expanding and contracting the XD's screen is an engaging experience, with visible mechanisms at work. Observing the shift from 13.3 inches to 15.9 inches reveals the sophistication of the technology and the playful aspect of shapeshifting screens. The transparency of certain components enhances the device's high-tech appeal, and the demo showed that integrating see-through elements enhances user fascination with foldable tech.

Lenovo’s Continuum of Shapeshifting Concepts

Lenovo has been experimenting with various flexible display ideas following the success of their rollable ThinkBook. The ThinkBook Flip concept eliminated complex mechanics, opting for manual folding, making it potentially more affordable. The ThinkBook VertiFlex allowed users to switch the display orientation vertically, catering to diverse use cases. These concepts aim to offer versatile devices at lower costs compared to the $3,300 ThinkPad XD.

Practical Features and Future Possibilities

Currently, the prototype includes minimal ports—primarily a power button and a Kensington lock on one side—with the rolling mechanism fully contained within the lid. During the presentation, a Lenovo representative mentioned the possibility of offering the rolling display as a configurable option for regular ThinkPads, hinting at future commercial versions.

While Lenovo has not disclosed detailed specifications or chipsets for the XD yet, its consistent release of innovative concepts suggests that some form of shapeshifting display may eventually reach consumers.

Final Thoughts

The ThinkPad Rollable XD exemplifies the future of flexible display technology—combining functionality, aesthetics, and interactivity. Whether it becomes a standalone product or remains a concept, it highlights Lenovo’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of portable computing.
