Meta to Invest in New Nuclear Reactors to Power AI Data Centers

Meta has announced plans to fund the construction of new nuclear reactors to meet the energy demands of its AI data centers. The company has entered into agreements with three nuclear power providers: TerraPower (backed by Bill Gates), Oklo (backed by Sam Altman), and Vistra. These partnerships aim to deliver a total of 6.6 gigawatts of electricity by 2035—enough to power a nation the size of Ireland.

The AI initiatives include the launch of Prometheus, a state-of-the-art supercluster computing system expected to be operational in New Albany, Ohio, later this year. As part of its commitment, Meta plans to initiate the first nuclear reactor construction with the potential for commissioning as early as 2030.

This move forms part of Meta’s broader strategy to utilize nuclear energy for its future AI infrastructure, building on previous efforts such as a deal with Constellation to revive an aging nuclear power plant last year.

Financial specifics of these agreements have not been disclosed, but Meta has stated that it will cover the full costs of the energy used by its data centers, ensuring consumers are not burdened with these expenses.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, emphasized the significance of these deals: “Our agreements with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation position Meta as one of the largest corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in U.S. history. Advanced data centers and AI infrastructure are critical to maintaining America’s leadership in AI technology.”
