Ubisoft Closes Halifax Studio Weeks After Unionization

January 7, 2026

Ubisoft has shut down its Halifax development studio just weeks after it employees voted to unionize. According to VGC, the company states that the closure was part of “company-wide actions to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs,” and denies any connection to the unionization effort.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) Canada, representing the affected employees, has vowed to “pursue every legal recourse” available in response to the closure.

This decision raises concerns about the potential impact of unionization efforts on employment stability within major gaming companies, and highlights ongoing tensions between corporate restructuring and workers’ rights.
