simple query

Is There a Release Date for Shōgun Season 2?

While an exact release date remains unconfirmed, principal photography is scheduled to begin in 2026. This suggests the earliest possible release could be in 2027. The series was first announced in 2018 and premiered to record-breaking ratings in February 2024. Following its success, FX announced the renewal in May 2024, with rumors pointing to a potential back-to-back shoot for Seasons 2 and 3. However, FX Chairman John Landgraf clarified that a third season is not guaranteed, but likely given the unfolding story and character arcs.

Filming is expected to last at least a year, so fans should anticipate a wait of about 1-2 years before new episodes air.

Season 2 Plot & Time-Jump

Shōgun Season 2 takes place a decade after Season 1's events, exploring new depths through a sweeping love story and a poignant exploration of war’s toll. FX describes the season as "a continuation of the historically-inspired saga of two men from different worlds whose fates are intertwined."

This season promises an experimental approach, intentionally subverting expectations, and will introduce a wholly original narrative, expanding on characters and situations from Clavell’s original novel not fully explored in Season 1.

In November 2025, co-creator Justin Marks shared insights:

“Part two will be a sweeping, beautiful, and unexpectedly romantic story. It’s also about war and its devastating cost. We’re creating large-scale battle sequences, capturing tragedy and humanity on an unprecedented level.”

The 10-year leap allows the show to revisit characters' lives and evolving relationships, adding depth to their journeys. However, some original characters, like Ishido Kazunari portrayed by Takehiro Hira, may meet their end early in the season, aligning with their historical fates.

Spoiler alert:
Hira hinted at an honorable death for his character, hinting at some characters’ limited remaining screen time.

Filming Locations

Season 2 will continue filming in Vancouver—matching Season 1's location—despite initial hopes from Hiroyuki Sanada to shoot in Japan.
