Towerborne Officially Launching on February 26th as a Paid Offline Game

Towerborne, a side-scrolling action RPG developed by Stoic and published by Xbox Game Studios, has been available in early access. Originally planned as a free-to-play, always-online game, it will now launch on February 26th as a paid title with offline capabilities.

Transition from Free-to-Play to Paid Experience

In a recent Xbox Wire blog post, Trisha Stouffer, CEO and president of Stoic, explained the reasoning behind the switch:

"You will own the complete experience permanently, with offline play and online co-op. This change required deep structural rebuilding over the past year, transforming systems originally designed around constant connectivity. The result is a stronger, more accessible, and more player-friendly version of Towerborne — one we’re incredibly proud to bring to launch."

Community Feedback Drives Changes

An FAQ on the game’s official channels mentions that player feedback during early access indicated a desire for a full, polished experience without ongoing monetization mechanics:

"Moving to a premium model lets us deliver the full game upfront—no live-service grind, no pay-to-win systems—just the best version of Towerborne."

This shift aligns Towerborne more closely with players seeking a single, complete adventure without the pressure of microtransactions, making it potentially more appealing compared to live-service titles like Fortnite and Roblox.

What to Expect in the 1.0 Release

The official launch will include a “complete” story, new bosses, and a reworked difficulty system. Players will also have the opportunity to earn all in-game cosmetics freely through gameplay, with no additional purchases required.

Early access players will retain their access to the game moving forward.
